Tansey Contemporary is pleased to present “Fictitious Fiber", a group exhibition curated by Jane Sauer on view from October 7 through November 4, 2016 at 652 Canyon Road, Santa Fe NM.
The exhibition seeks to highlight a new iteration of Fiber Art, operating outside the traditional boundaries. It features the work of nine innovative and well-regarded artists, each exploring the techniques and sensibilities of fiber art, but who create their work using non-fibrous materials.
Selected artists include Ran Adler, Ann B. Coddington, Tom Eckert, Melanie Ferguson, Jim Kraft, Kait Rhoads, Nancy Newman Rice, Harue Shimomoto and Susanna Starr.
Each artist is masterful and daring in their studio practice exploring the unexpected relationships between fiber and other creative disciplines. Clay appears as cloth and is weaved to resemble ancient basket forms, glass is presented as delicate threads and sewed intricately with wire, wood mimics lace, painting emulates tapestry, natural materials are threaded together to represent the repetitive patterns found in textiles. Jane Sauer explains:
“By exhibiting these works, I intend to explore a new and fresh vein in the wayfiber art is visible as an art form. Art is an ever-evolving field with a rush of new art forms surfacing in the last 20 years. I believe this innovative language will continue to unfold and proliferate, pushing boundaries still further in the future and offering an expanded definition of Fiber Art."
Join us for the opening reception Friday, October 7 from 5 – 7pm. Many of the artists will be present.
