Tansey Contemporary is pleased to present AN EXUBERANCE OF COLOR In Studio Jewelry, curated by Gail M. Brown, an exhibition of exceptional studio jewelry, beginning August 5 through September 17 at 652 Canyon Road with an opening reception on Friday August 5, 5-7pm. The exhibition will include twenty masterful and well-documented American jewelry artists, each with their own points of view and inspiration about body adornment as a means of chosen expression and commentary.
Artists include Julia Barello, Harrriete Estel Berman, Jessica Calderwood, Arline Fisch, Donald Friedlich, Rebekah Laskin, Amy Lemaire, Karen Thuesen Massaro, Bruce Metcalf, Mike & Maaike, emiko oye, Marjorie Schick, Joyce J. Scott, Barbara Seidenath, Helen Shirk, Marjorie Simon, Rachelle Thiewes, Linda Threadgill, Cynthia Toops and Dan Adams and Roberta and Dave Williamson.
Independent curator Gail M. Brown has been ardently watching these artists evolve his or her ongoing visual vocabulary and personal creative journey. The diverse ideas, forms, imagery and chosen material palettes provide a unique, colorful perspective on brooches and pins, earrings, necklaces, neckpieces and finger rings.
All works are masterfully conceived and executed, designed for the context and wearable scale of the body. Their juxtapositions - minimal or excessive, raucous or demure, opaque, translucent, warm, cool - together create a captivating, seductive display symbolizing the joy of the conception, implementation and anticipated wearing. Each work demonstrates the personality and imagination of the artist telling a significant story of identity, fashion, experimentation and nostalgia.
The audience will be treated to a broad range of expected and unexpected materials and processes accentuating the tactile and visual experience. These include beads, copper wire, enamels, glass, gold, mixed metals, polymers, porcelain, silver, steel, wood, car paint, china paint, ceramic decals, formica laminates, x-ray and MRI film, leather, plastics, 3D printing, printed tin and recycled memorabilia. Built, carved, cast, designed, dyed, forged, gold leafed, hand crocheted, machine knitted, printed, scored and soda-limed, the featured works address and redefine value in the artful manipulation of ideas, process and materials with a shared fascination, challenge, response and pleasure in working with color.
Join us for the opening reception Friday August 5 from 5-7pm.
